People Living Together
There is no such thing as a “common law” wife or
husband in English law. If you live with another person for at least two
years, then you gain only a limited right to claim on their estate if they
die.
When unmarried couples split, the Court has to use laws that were never
intended to deal with cohabiting couples. This can make these cases more
difficult than divorce cases. Karen O’Neill is accredited by Resolution
(formerly the Solicitors Family Law Association) in this specialist and
complex area.
